SUMMARY:SHREEYA I grew up in a very traditional conservative Gujarati family- from the moment I heard soca music I fell in love with it
DESCRIPTION:I was born here in Luton  my parents migrated from Africa. My dad was born in Uganda and moved here when he was 6 years old in 1974 and my mum was born in Tanzania and moved when she was 13 in 1982 \nI grew up in a very traditional conservative Gujarati family \nThey got married in 1991 and 3 years later I came along 😊 although I grew up in a conservative household I was also exposed to a variety of different music genres and different cultures mostly through my dads great music taste and I learnt a lot about life in Tanzania through my mums stories. I met Jelani who introduced me to West Indian culture and music and from the moment I heard soca music I fell in love with it. \nI came into carnival through my friend Jelani\, before that I had taken part in Luton carnival when I was younger but never really understood the work and history behind carnival. \nMy first experience with S.I.A was definitely memorable to say the least. From attending mas camp to the day of Notting hill carnival. I had so much fun creating the costumes\, paying attention to all the details and different parts of the costumes. \nFrom my first experience with S.i.a in 2014\, carnival has become a major part of my life. The one thing I especially look forward to and wait for each year is everything about carnival. It’s the one thing that keeps me sane and brings me a boost of energy at the same time. And at the end of the day I’m sad that we have to wait another whole year to see our carnival family and play mas once again. \nA couple of years ago I had a son and was in no condition to take part in playing mas\, but That still stop me from joining as a spectator and jumping in with the family to parade down the streets. Last year I brought my son along and will continue to do so as soon as it’s safe to do so. For me carnival is about culture\, family and love. The vibes that you experience that day are so amazing that I can’t think of any words to describe them well! \nThank you Ray and the team at sunshine! Shreeeya \n#NHC2020 #NottingHillCarnival #carnivaldiversity

SUMMARY:Thisbe - I fell in love with the power of carnival as an artform and mode of self-expression.
DESCRIPTION:I have been going to Notting Hill Carnival since I moved to the UK from Brazil in 2003\, aged 14\, when my family temporarily lived in St Charles Square\, right behind Ladbroke Grove. Although carnival is part of my culture I hadn’t experienced it before moving to London\, and I never really thought of it as part of my life. I got involved with carnival arts when I joined Mandinga Arts as an administration intern in 2012\, as an Art History graduate. I knew that I loved art\, but wanted to be involved with a more democratic type and after running through the streets of Bridgewater in a stripy devil like costume and appalling the locals\, I fell in love with the power of carnival as an artform and mode of self-expression. I met Ray at Mandinga’s Trustee meeting which we held at C.A.F.E\, and was over the moon when a position as Centre and Administration Manager came up. \nI had Ray’s Trini food for lunch on a daily basis to the sound of soca\, learnt to feather\, braid and bend wire\, and met some wonderful people. I worked with Ray for two years (2015-2017) but was so in love with his unique approach to carnival and S.I.A’s sense of community spirit\, that I  have been on the road with them ever since\, introducing friends\, partners and colleagues to Mas; some of whom are now regulars. There is no other feeling quite like standing at the top of Ladbroke Grove overlooking a sea of a million people\, surrounded by S.I.A’s diverse\, beautiful Mas Band. Even more special is to follow the whole process\, seeing the costumes and ideas come to life at Mas Camp\, and closing the circle with hectically packing them into the back of a van as the sun goes down on Monday of carnival. \n \n#NHC2020 #NottingHillCarnival #carnivaldiversity

SUMMARY:Jackie- my parents are from Jamaica and I was born in England. First time in Carnival !
DESCRIPTION:One Saturday afternoon I attended a course at S.I.A and subscribed to their mailing list\, so that I could be notified of any of their up and coming events. \nI received a newsletter in June\, and I noticed an article regarding volunteers required in July to help with ‘Mas Camp’. As I had booked a day off in June for an appointment which was subsequently cancelled\, I decided to go to S.I.A in Brixton\, to find out some more information.  I met with Ray the owner and he gave me some background information regarding the history around carnival\, and how he had to think up a theme and what the costumes would be like each year for carnival- it was a real eye-opener.  I did not realise just how much work was involved.  Ray then asked me ‘would you like to take part in carnival?.  I remember looking at Ray and asking him ‘me\, take part in carnival?’  He said yes why not\, it’s a great opportunity!  Next thing I know\, I had agreed to take part and was deciding what costume I would be wearing. \n \nWhen Mas Camp started in July\, whenever I finished my day job and when S.I.A had their late nights\, I couldn’t wait to get there\, meeting up with other volunteers\, the staff\, and helping out with making the costumes – I really enjoyed it\, it was therapeutic\, and the time went quickly.  I also did some volunteering on some Saturdays too. \nIn the run up to the Carnival weekend\, arrangements were made as to how the participants would get to the Carnival.  I was taking part on the Monday and decided to get on the minibus leaving S.I.A   I had to reach by 6 am😏 so that we could leave by 6.30. This was to make sure that we missed the traffic on our way to Notting Hill and got to our designated spot so that the relevant checks could be made\, because if we had missed our slot we would not have been able to take part! I think we arrived between 7.30-8.00am \, we were due to join the carnival route around 11.00am. During the wait\, I had my face painted\, which was another first for me\, and chatted with the other Mas Camp volunteers in the team\, and then around 10.30am\, as I was already in my costume\, I helped some of the other volunteers with heavier costumes\, put theirs on and we joined the procession.  From the beginning\, the atmosphere was fantastic\, in front of the minibus to the music with the other volunteers in my camp as well as the revellers\, along the carnival route\, whilst having a shot of rum every now and then.  I even saw members of my family and friends too\, couldn’t believe it-out of all the millions of people who attended!! Mind you\, I had given them the name of the float that I was on\, so that they could keep a look out and I guess that helped.  I had aimed to do the whole route\,  and we were about an hour away from the end\, (I think it was about 6.00pm) when the police stopped the carnival due to overcrowding. It was such a shame\, but at least I was able to go and sit down and rest my aching feet and have something to eat!! \nThe minibus subsequently made its way through the crowd and back to S.I.A in Brixton. Ray invited us in for drinks\, some of the volunteers declined as it had been a long day and they wanted to start making their way home.  The rest of us\, myself included stayed\, had a chat\, and a few drinks. After a while\, I said my goodbyes and made my way home. \nThank you Ray for giving me the opportunity to take part in and experience this well know event\, one which I had attended as a reveller for many\, many years before.  I will never forget it!! \nJackie- my parents are from Jamaica and I was born in England. \n#NHC2020 #NottingHillCarnival #carnivaldiversity

SUMMARY:OIL SLICK \, Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea  2015
DESCRIPTION:SUNSHINE INTERNATIONAL ARTS  \nMODERN/CONTEMPORARY MEDIUM BANDS \nWar Birds – The Silver Lining – Pure in the Heart \n DESIGN BY RAY MAHABIR  \nThe concept of War Birds is based upon hope for future generations\, and encourages the optimistic dream that the next generation will learn from our mistakes and flourish from what they have learnt.  \nVisually we are working with:  \nThe Arctic is the last great unprotected wilderness\, safe haven for endangered species and home to native people whose sustainable lifestyle has survived in harmony with nature for thousands of years. \nClimate change has caused this region to grow warmer twice as fast as the rest of the planet\, melting the large ice masses that maintained the planetary stability.  The ground is therefore softer and more malleable and this makes these huge reserves of oil and gas more accessible. \nWhose right is it to rip apart this tranquil nirvana to the North?  The Arctic territorial boundaries are unclear\, especially as the landmass changes drastically on a daily basis.   \nSections: \nPure in the heart – hope \nThe silver Lining – the future  \nThe doves- let’s have peace  \nWar birds – the fight to save the Arctic  \nThe RIGS  \nThe S.i.A family  \nThe cold war did not end in the 80s.   \n  \n“If we have no peace\, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.” ~ Mother Teresa \n  \n \nMODERN/CONTEMPORARY MEDIUM BANDS \n OIL SLICK  \nBetween the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea  \n  \n“Wealth and poverty tumultuously converge at the estuary of uncertainty. A wretched celebration.  Beautiful yet tragic.   \nToxic at its very soul.  \n  \nThe exquisite richness of sapphires and emeralds of ancient royalty from a world long since extinct.  That glint of black gold in the eyes\, ignoring the weeping of oily tears and the gnashing of mortar teeth\, exploding into desolation as they hit the earth\, leaving only oily entrails and malignant scars.  \n \n. \nOil Slick depicts the Gulf War and all its false promises.  Deceit and lies hidden by good intentions by the very people who are supposed to be honourably leading us to greatness.  An attempt to spread freedom and eliminate weapons of mass destruction. \nSection:  TurmOil  BACCHANAL throughout the Middle East. Justified by the COMMESS of rich world leaders puffing on their premium cigars. The Middle East has suffocated and died and all they do is MAMAGUY and go home to a warm bed and safe home.  \n  \n  \nTHE DYING SWANS describes the human element of the war for oil.   \nHope – the dove of peace – Everything is still.  The calm before the storm.  A future gleaming with hope even if the present isn’t perfect. \nInner love – the Queen of Hearts – the love for fellow mankind that is naturally engrained in us as humans at birth. \nEnvy – Pitch BLACK – Envy of what others have – why should they have it when you can?  The coveting of goods and experiences.  \nGreed – BLACK GOLD – Greed causing unspeakable thoughts\, actions and desires. \nHope – Ah Peace of BLACK –  Hope that it will all be well regardless of actions of those driven by Envy and Greed.   \nmEn….. The RIGs….. – The end result.  Blood spilt onto the dusty earth supplementing the oil spouting from the newly constructed oil rigs.  Oil rigs raping the world of its very essence \n

SUMMARY:The birth of a Mas Band -Sunshine International Arts (S.i.A) 2008-2020 NHC
DESCRIPTION:1998- “Well\, A ‘Mas Man’\, That was my new dream and to tell you the truth\, I never thought that it was going to happen. It was not easy to obtain\, but Britain and the diverse cultures of the communities of this place inspired me to work towards that dream\, and I have achieved it.  So do dreams really come true? \n2001- On my return to the UK I developed Sunshine International Arts (S.i.A)\, a UK based arts charity. India gave me the idea for the company and charity motto – “The Art of The People”. After coming to the UK to live I found what I call my “new village” – Loughborough Junction\, Brixton\, London – the home of Sunshine International Arts. \nS.i.A’s vision is to create work that is the haute couture of carnival arts\, which is challenging in its vision and content.  \n#siasummer20nhc #siafamilymystory Click Here  \n

SUMMARY:1983. Meeting the Midnight Robber Celia Burgess Macey
DESCRIPTION:#siasummer20nhc#siafamilymystor \n1983. Meeting the Midnight Robber Celia Burgess Macey  \nIt was carnival time. Whilst I was walking up Frederick Street I was accosted by an old man and two children all dressed in Robber costumes. He looked me straight in the eyes\, displaying a knowing twinkle\, and held me at gunpoint while he recited a long dramatic speech. I was quite astonished and Neil who was laughing told me I must pay him a \ndollar otherwise he would continue.  \nSo I did this and then turned to the children and asked them if they were going to challenge me too. To my delight they immediately performed their speeches and also got a dollar. And that was my first meeting with a Midnight Robber.(3 in fact)  \nOf course we went to see the street parade on Carnival Tuesday. Peter Minshall’s band were particularly impressive\, there was a costume shaped like an atomic bomb and lots of very dramatic and scary costumes. The most dramatic of all were the Moko Jumbies\, who were all dressed in black with long flowing sleeves. As a large group of them advanced down the road and across the Savannah towards the carnival stage\, the hairs  \nliterally stood up on the back of my neck. I was hooked. This was more than fun. This was passion and spirit. This was life and death. \nThe Midnight Robber \nThe Midnight Robber is a complex character whom I have encountered in a variety of settings. I have also read about the character in the National library in Trinidad and in a variety of scholarly articles. I have seen the large Robber like hats in the African section at the British Museum. I have seen the Robber costume in the Horniman Museum. I have seen similar characters in the carnival in Cuba\, but always slightly different. \n I have described my first meeting in the streets of Port-of-Spain and have since listened to many Robber speeches delivered in the competition which is held each year in Port of Spain. Brian Honore always particularly impressed me and I noticed that he included political aspects in his speech. I also noticed that very few women played this character\, but they did exist. When I was working in St Ursula’s girls primary school during one of my educational exchange projects\, the girls played this character enthusiastically along with other traditional characters like Damme Lorraine and Devil. So what is it in this character that particularly attracts me personally? \nFirstly I respect the complexity of the character. The Robber is complex-a syncretic mix of cultural forms. Part African masquerade\, part European Catholic Lenten carnival’s Grim Reaper and ubiquitous deathsheads\, part Mexican day of the dead and part cowboy hero. Is he hero or anti hero. I am never quite sure.  \nSecondly I see the Robber as deeply connected to the oral tradition\, which contains many layers of meaning but is undervalued in mainstream culture. His speeches surely resonate with the poetry of the African griots\, with the boastful and declamatory speech of superheroes\, giants and monstrous spirits. He sounds like Amos Tutuolas ghosts. He sounds like Beowulf. He sounds like a character from Shakespeare. My mother who had been Shakespearean actress used to recite Shakespeare to me from a very young age. The Midnight Robber is larger than life. He is scary like the monsters  we were scared of in the stories and folk traditions we imbibed as children.   \nThirdly he is impressive. He makes his physical presence felt in his swagger. He commands attention with his whistle. His long and wide cloak take up space and clear the way. His large hat takes up space and makes a statement. His costume has the deaths heads and skeletons of the mediaeval imagination\, he reminds us of the inevitability of death. He threatens us with his gun as well as with his speech. He challenges us to pay attention. I can relate to that Challenge. I am not afraid to take up space. \n My father worked in a felt Hat factory. His job was to test the hats for weatherproofing and the stability of the dyes. He used to bring all kinds of hats home and many of them ended up in our dressing up box. A large black Mexican cowboy hat was the particular favourite of mine. When I was a young and flamboyant student in the 1960s I used to wear this hat accompanied by tightfitting black velvet trousers from Carnaby street and leather boots. I also had a cape. I was anticipating the Midnight Robber. \nLastly I love the speeches. The poetry of the English language-the language of the Bible\, of Chaucer\, of Milton and of Shakespeare. I studied that language in my English degree. The playing with impressive vocabularly and the creating of atmosphere-conjuring fear and awe from words. Creating an argument. We have sadly lost the art of declamatory and oratorical speeches. The oratory I grew up with in church and in politics. So I try in my speeches to capture something of the power of words. I try to use those words to describe cataclysmic events\, the beginning and end of worlds. I try to use the speech to accuse people in power and to speak truth clothed in metaphor. It is not hard to learn the speech by heart\, but it is hard to recall it under the pressure of performance in front of the carnival judges!. \nIn Yaa I also played Pierrot Grenade on two occasions. This is another character who plays with language and adopts a scholarly posture and attitude which suited my teacher identity. However I had no opportunity to perform any Pierrot speech. \n Neil joined this band and in 2002 he and I played a Fancy Sailor for the theme Tru de Eye and in 2003 he played Sailor while I played a Midnight Robber. Whilst I love playing mas in the band with Neil chippin down the road together\, it was more difficult to stay in character when his presence constantly reminded me of my real life self!   \nMy membership of Yaa Asantewaa Carnival band came to an end when they decided that they would only bring out a youth section band not an adult band. Since I was not a youth that excluded me. I retain great affection for that band but I needed somewhere to play mas.  \nSunshine International Arts  \nThe band’s artistic practice is grounded in the traditions of Caribbean Carnival\, including the traditional characters that I so love. I was delighted when Ray suggested that I could play Midnight Robber. I was even more delighted when he agreed that I could write my own speech. It is in this band that I have been able to grow into my character\, whether Pierrot Grenade or Midnight Robber\, because Ray has given me the artistic freedom to do so. I enjoy my day on the road and the reaction of the crowds and the scared faces of children shrinking behind their adults. \nWritten by Celia Burgess Macey 26th of May 2020 Click Here  \n

SUMMARY:Master of the mas...Jonathan Ali
DESCRIPTION:Master of the mas \nWill Peter Minshall produce another Carnival band? Since his last outing some four years ago\, Trinidad and Tobago’s leading living masman has shown no signs of rejoining the decreasingly creative fray. As he nears his seventieth birthday\, the speculation that we may have seen the last of Minshall increases\, though many no doubt still hold out hope that he will return\, if only for a las’ lap.

SUMMARY:Freedom – Family – Fun! What does Carnival mean to you?#siasummer20nhc #siafamilymystory
DESCRIPTION:Carnival is an explosive array of  colour. Ornate\, extravagant\, ‘Mas’ (costumes) stimulate the visual senses and community comes together as one. Cutting through the loud Soca soundsystems is the individual’s voice of what Carnival means to them. We asked some of our participants what they love about carnival:Carnival \n

SUMMARY:Sunshine's NHC 2020 Statement
DESCRIPTION:Sunshine’s NHC 2020 Statement\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFollowing the news that Notting Hill Carnival 2020 has been officially cancelled\, we wanted to take the opportunity to get in touch and tell you about our plans.\nFirst\, a word from S.i.A’s Director\, Ray Mahabir: \n“Notting Hill Carnival is a time to rejoice and celebrate. After 23 years of involvement as a family-oriented Mas Band leader\, I am saddened that my members are unable to experience this annual festivity. More than this\, for most of my members this is the one time of the year that they can come together to celebrate the cultural roots of their forefathers\, and the heritage that they belong to. \n  \nI feel for my members\, as the carnival we create is down to each person’s love and passion for the artform. But we can all agree that lives come first. S.i.A must take into consideration the well-being of our members and their loved ones. \n  \nWith this I know that the true meaning of community and carnival culture will live on and will ALWAYS be there! \nSee you all on the road in 2021 \n…aH sea of …HopE… LOVE…LIFE…de silver lining…” \n  \nRay Mahabir – Sunshine International Arts

SUMMARY:Reach the Unreachable Kenya 2019 -
DESCRIPTION:#siasummer20nhc \nReach the Unreachable Kenya 2019 –  \nAs the Artistic Director of S.i.A\, my main focus so far has been within Britain\, as well as some international projects. I have spent the past 23 years taking carnival arts to new audiences national and international\, but one piece of the puzzle was missing. In 2018 I decided it was time to re-visit Caribbean carnival in it’s birthland – Trinidad and Tobago – but I could not ignore the roots and history it has in Africa (as well as Europe). \nThese three areas of the world make up what is known as the ‘Transatlantic Triangular Trade Route’. My idea was to reverse this route and educate the three continents in the Art of Carnival. Click Here
