DESCRIPTION:Brixton will be celebrating its local markets at part of the UK-wide Love Your Local Market Week from Friday 26 May – Wednesday 31 May. Brixton has a rich history of markets and market trading not seen elsewhere in London – and organisers are determined to bring people to the area as well as encourage the local community to come out and have fun. \nS.i.A will have its own stall on Electric Avenue\, where we will be exhibiting items from our Mulana range and will be giving locals the chance to try on our carnival headresses. All profits will go towards our charitable projects: Mulana and our children’s carnival.  \nDuring Love Your Local Market week\, there will be plenty of activities for everyone – young and old – with stalls\, celebrity breakfast\, face painting\, clowns\, stilt walkers\, DJs\, live bands and walking tours. \nThis year’s event is organised by the Brixton BID (Business Improvement District) in partnership with Lambeth council\, Groupe Geraud\, Brixton Pound\, Brixton Market Traders Federation CIC \, and Lambeth Forest Network /Tree Shepherd.

DESCRIPTION:Art for Autism is an exhibition showcasing and celebrating art by people on the autistic spectrum. \nAround 700\,000 people in the UK are on the autism spectrum – that’s more than 1 in 100 people. Together with their families\, this means autism is a part of daily life for 2.8 million people. \nWhat is Autism?\nAutism (including Asperger Syndrome) is a lifelong\, developmental disability that affects how a person communicates with and relates to other people\, and how they experience the world around them. \nAutistic people see\, hear and feel the world differently to other people. If you are autistic\, you are autistic for life; autism is not an illness or disease and cannot be ‘cured’. Often people feel being autistic is a fundamental aspect of their identity. \nAutism is a spectrum condition. All autistic people share certain difficulties\, but being autistic will affect them in different ways. Some autistic people also have learning disabilities\, mental health issues or other conditions\, meaning people need different levels of support. With the right sort of support\, all can be helped to live a more fulfilling life of their own choosing. \nWhy art? \nWe believe giving people the opportunity to express themselves through art fosters independence\, self-esteem and artistic expression. We hope to raise awareness of the importance of the arts as viable tools for learning\, growth and expression; especially for autistic artists and to celebrate their valuable contributions to society.

Spaces limited\, pre-booking advised. \nGather for a new moon late afternoon with Mahadevi\, the Great Goddess\, exploring her multifaceted personalities and gifts through a practice incorporating the Goddess archetypes. \nAcknowledging the elemental forces and our connection to a wider cyclical nature\, we’ll explore the Goddess’ capacity to create\, to sustain and nurture; her ability to tolerate the unknown; her love of the dark and the night and the moon; the wisdom of the circle\, not the line. \nInspired by the ancient scriptures\, the Upanishads\, and in particular the Devi Upanishad\, this workshop will incorporate an introduction to the ‘Tridevi’ – three goddesses who are the manifestations of the Great Goddess herself. Our physical practice will draw on asana\, mudra\, and mantra to explore each of these faces of the Goddess; from insight and wisdom\, to balance and serenity\, to fierce transformation and power. Under the guise and enthusiasm of Trinidadian designer Ray Mahabir\, you will gain a variety of skills in carnival arts and learn the truest form and history of traditional carnival Mas Bands. In a highly differing communal setting\, Mas Camp offers a brilliant schedule of carnival arts that will not only be heart warming and enjoyable\, but also artistically challenging. \nCome today to learn more about how to get involved from our resident designer and carnival pioneer Ray.
